Singulair (Montelukast)

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Courtesy of www.medstores.net Montelukast (trade name Singulair), also available in Pakistan with the brand name of Montel manufactured and marketed by Star laboratories, is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies. It is usually administered orally. This reduces the bronchoconstriction otherwise caused by the leukotriene, and results in less inflammation. Because of its method of operation, it is not useful for the treatment of acute asthma attacks. Again because of its very specific focus of operation, it does not interact with other asthma medications such as theophylline. Side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, sleep disorders and increased bleeding tendency, aside from many other generic adverse reactions. Its use is associated with a higher incidence of Churg-Strauss syndrome (whether or not this drug is ‘unmasking’ subclinical Churg-Strauss is as yet uncertain). In March, 2008 the FDA announced that it would investigate whether mood changes and suicidal thoughts are possible side effects of drugs in this class, including the popular drug Singulair, which currently lists these side effects On June 12, 2009 the Food and Drug Administration concluded their review into the possibility of neuropsychiatric side effects with leukotriene modulator drugs. Although clinical trials only revealed an increased risk of insomnia, post-marketing

Prescription Drugs–Manipulated Clinical Research, 5/7

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

www.encognitive.com ONE of Australia’s most senior cancer specialists has accused pharmaceutical companies of manipulating some clinical trials of medicines for commercial reasons, including deliberately delaying the release of negative findings and being reluctant to fund research into the toxicity of their drugs. Professor Stephen Clarke, who has conducted clinical trials involving humans for 15 years, agreed to speak publicly for the first time because he said it was essential for governments to fund trials of great public importance rather than leaving critical research solely to drug companies. A number of researchers who spoke to The Age agreed, saying commercial decisions meant the public did not always get the full picture about a drug’s usefulness and safety. http

Prescription Drugs–Gifts and Trips, 4/7

Friday, October 15th, 2010

www.encognitive.com Unfortunately, health care corruption in this country doesn’t end with the FDA; it has infiltrated the whole system. Drug companies regularly use trips, dinners, cash and free drugs to “persuade” doctors to prescribe new and expensive pharmaceuticals, according to many sources. These bribery expenses pay for themselves many times over, as the most popular drug may not be necessarily the most effective or the one with the least number of side effects, but rather the one that has been promoted and advertised the most. Now, of course, the pharmaceutical companies disguise their bribes under the altruistic term “gifts,” but Natural Alternatives author Michael T. Murray finds the term suspect, asking poignantly, “If the drug company didn’t expect the gift to influence the doctor’s decision, why would it give the gift?” He goes on to clarify, “A gift implies that there are no strings attached.” As much as they would not like to admit it to others, or especially to themselves, doctors know that these “gifts” are linked to an ulterior motive, according to Dr. Jerome P. Kassirer in his book, On the Take. In other words, you may not always be able to trust your doctor to make an objective decision about your care. http
